Gotcha!
Today was Sheringham Lifeboat Day, when the lifeboat station is opened to the public and several fundraising events are put on. It started with a demonstration by the Sheringham and Cromer lifeboats putting on some impressive manoeuvres off the beach, before the Sheringham boat came back in. My shot shows how they get it back on shore. The trailer has a large net across it. The tractor backs the trailer into the sea and the lifeboat aims at it at some speed and gets caught in the net; all impressive stuff! An interesting fact is that the Sheringham lifeboat is believed to be the only one which launches the boat directly into the sea off the beach; all the others launch into a harbour or estuary. It was actually in use just yesterday, rescuing three paddle boarders that had got into difficulty off shore.
I took loads of shots so have added a couple in the extra showing the Sheringham boat at the top with the Cromer boat underneath. The Sheringham boat cost around £250,000 while the Cromer one cost about ten times that at around £2.5m, and the RNLI relies solely on donations with no Government funding whatsoever. I gave them a fairly generous donation.
