THE SOAP FACTORY - SOMETHING HISTORIC
The soap factory (colloquially referred to) was built in 1905 by Robert and Arthur Bunnings with W.H. Burford and Sons Ltd operating a candle and soap making factory on Bay Road (now Rule St) in North Fremantle from 1905 to 1946.
The soap factory was built with close access to the port, rail facilities and the river for dumping waste! Apart from making soap for the home and commercial use, candles were also manufactured and the company also won awards for them and the candles were favoured for the hot climes of the goldfields (Kalgoorlie) as they did not bend, even in the hottest sun.
Burfords became part of the Lever-Kitchen-Burford group in 1914.
Factory building was unused from 1946 - 1959.
From 1959 saw the buildings used for the first margarine production by Unilever. However, the operation didn't last long.
Between 1976 and 1979 Hood Sails used the building as a sail loft.
In 1980 the building was restored to four river-front units as you see now.
Thank you for your concerns for my son's family. Isy is back to herself and managed daycare yesterday, Sophia still zinging and mum looking heaps better.
Thanks, Bob for hosting Wide Wednesday
