The Provan Gas Works

This is a blip of two gasometers just east of Glasgow off the M8 motorway. These have become iconic as a landmark for the unofficial start of Glasgow from those travelling from the east (wise men or otherwise.)

A gasometer is used to store gas. These two were built in 1900 and are amongst the largest in the UK. They have been decommissioned due to advances in direct gas pipelines. I remember these two when they would look different almost daily with the towers now hidden in the centre of the structures would fill the frames as they filled with gas.

Many people see gasometers as a blot on the landscape. I think they are a cracking example of our industrial heritage.
