Charing Cross Mansions

I was called for jury service today at Paisley Sheriff Court, but fortunately I was not chosen. This is the third time I have been called, but have only been selected on one occasion.

On the way back from Paisley this afternoon I decided to try and get a shot of Charing Cross Mansions. It was a bit windy, but at least the sun had come out.

Charing Cross Mansions are one of the grandest red sandstone tenements in the city. Built for Robert Simpson & Son, Warehousemen, 1889-91, this was a modified version of JJ Burnet's French Renaissance-style entry in the City Chambers Competition of 1880. The centre piece is the quite extravagant and beautiful tower that adorns the Mansions.

The many sculptures which appear on the façade are by William Birnie Rhind. The grand clock at the centre of the façade is surrounded by a sculpture inspired by Michelangelo.
