Day 236/22. A Special Hammer.

This is a special artifact from the museum that came out today for me to photograph. This is a hammer, but not just an ordinary hammer. The hammer head is formed from one of the wing attachment bolts of the prototype Sptifire, K5054. Only 2 hammers were made, the wherabouts of the second one is unknown. This is the only known surviving piece from the prototype Spitfire.
K5054 was the name given to the prototype Supermarine Spitfire as flown by Joseph ‘Mutt’ Summers in March 1936. The flight was such a revelation that on landing Summers said of K5054 “Don’t touch a thing”.
K5054 took off on its maiden flight at 16.30 on March 5th 1936 from Eastleigh Aerodrome in Hampshire. The flight lasted just eight minutes.
