The Boy's Back In Town
I'd been told
he was back
in his denims
and his hat.
Was he packing
a six-gun?
No one was too sure
about that
but when I heard
the jangle of his spurs
and caught the drawl
of his voice
I slipped into
Rocky Raccoon's Hardware Store
and let the ornery critter
pass by.
Him and I?
We never did see
eye to eye.
Not since that business with Nancy.
I knew he'd be heading
to the saloon.
I waited a while
then followed him in.
I was surprised
that an old hand
like him
had his back to the door.
It was easy.
I took aim
and, without a second thought,
shot him.
He didn't feel a thing.
(It was only later
I learned it was
not him).
