Basking Shark

A nice day cycling on Sanday but the highlight came when I was waiting for the ferry. I asked a guy with a big camera and lens what he was shooting and he had spotted a basking shark. I glimpsed a dorsal but it submerged and seemed to have fled the approaching ferry. Luckily, from the ferry I saw it again and alerted the original spotter who joined me to watch it. Only my second in Orkney waters. Loads of birds on the island- hundreds of golden plover and bar-tailed godwits, some grey plover, 22 wheatears etc etc. The extra is of sanderlings.
