Every year I like to record the harvesting of the crops in the field beside the house and yesterday was the day that the spring barley was cut. The extra shows the combine loading the grain onto a trailer. Today the baler was collecting the straw into oblong bales and with the lack of adequate fresh grass in parts of Britain due to the drought perhaps farmers will buy it for animal fodder as well as for bedding. No doubt it will fetch a high price. Over the last ten years today was about the average date for the harvest in this field. Last year was exceptional as it was harvested on July 25th but the year before in 2020 the wheat was not cut till Sep 17th. Mostly the crops have been wheat or barley with oilseed rape in 2015 and oats in 2019.
