Escape Tower

A second day in Gosport. This is Haslar Marina. In the background is the Royal Navy's submarine escape tower. Many thousands of submariners passed through this Submarine Escape Training Tank (SETT) beginning in July 1954 when the first man ascended the 100ft column of water to simulate emerging from a sunken submarine. With the submarine flotilla moving to Faslane, as well as advances in submarine design and escape training, the SETT closed in 2020. It is a Listed Building.
