A Monochrome Encounter With a Rhomboid Semi Zebra

Today started with a four mile run - the longest we've done in weeks - with a route passing three supermarkets, two roundabouts, a dog friendly cafe, a railway bridge, a set of lock gates, a graffitied bridge underpass, a riverside path and a medieval bridge. Rather surprisingly I found it fairly easy going - although I did feel it in the old legs later once the endorphins had worn off!
After a suitable period of recuperation it was off to do the usual Sunday food shop followed by a pint at The Horseshoes. I'd just had a few sips of my beer when I noticed what appeared to be two tiny birds near our table in the pub garden who looked like they had become entangled.
At first I thought they might be fledglings that had fallen out of a nest but then engaged my brain properly - this wouldn't be the case in late August. I managed to separate them and they flew off into the nearest hedge but they then returned seconds later in exactly the same entanglement - and I realised they were actually fighting each other, presumably over territory. You don't normally have to referee a bird fight when you're trying to enjoy your pint!
When we got back we tried to find out what type of bird they were by looking up an RSPB website - I got quite excited when I thought it might be a very rare Firecrest (there are only approximately 550 pairs in the UK) but it was much more likely that it was its more common cousin the Goldcrest - although it can still claim to be the smallest bird in the UK (it's only 9 cm in length and weighs 5.5.g - the equivalent of a 20 pence coin).
Unfortunately I didn't have my camera with me (I know!) at the time of the bird fight so you'll just have to make do with another in my squanimal (square animal) series, in this case a rather curious semi zebra, - even though the camera angle has lent him a somewhat rhomboid appearance along with his rather mournful looking countenance!
