Great Expectations
St Thomas Becket church on Romney Marsh has been on our bucket list for quite some time. We knew we needed good light, and we also knew that it is in the middle of nowhere (in the middle of a field of sheep in fact) and parking could be an issue as it is popular with photographers. It is one of the most photographed locations in Kent.
We left late with dreary skies and expected the worst. What we got was way beyond our expectations. Parking was fine and the sky greatly improved. Access is along a footpath amongst the sheep and across wooden bridges. In wet weather I imagine the congregation have to be very dedicated to reach it.
It was built in the 12th century and restored in the 18th (when the original timber frame was encased in brick and can still be seen inside).
It was also used as the church in the 2011 TV adaptation of Great Expectations.
