Knots

The extra is a good example of what it often looks like when I pull the curtains aside in the morning. There are clearly conflicting elements battling, quite typical for September. Temperatures has dropped ten degrees in a week and the air has taken on a fresh, chilly attitude that we will have to get used to. The reason the clouds low down looks threatening is that the sea is still rather warm while the air is cooler, and maybe also  that we have low-pressure front system arriving. The autumn on my island is, due to the warm weather, usually very mild and winter, if any, arrives fairly late.

The main is, as followers might recognise, the shed that I'm upgrading from a sheep-shed to a tool-shed. Todays job has two purposes, to make a neat connection of the corners of the building, traditionally called a "knot" because of the often complicated ways of connecting the gable with the side wall joining the timber, or logs, in intricate ways, like a knot, to make a strong joint that could withstand wind and weather. The other reason is to make it look pretty. I don't have logs to work with, only planks and they leave the corners bare so you will have to use planks to cover the ugly gap and create a "finish" and a wind breaker. I've then treated the wood with tar and linseed-oil to preserve the wood and give it a nice colour. There's still some work left to do, a door and a window are the next two jobs, after that there's only interior work left.
