Winston Churchill at Dungeness, RHDR
We took our friends on a tour of the coastal area between Hythe and Dungeness today. Calling at Hythe for a coffee and scone and ending at The Pilot at Dungeness for the traditional fish and chip supper.
These two events bookended a quick trip to Dymchurch and a much longer (no surprise there) visit to the Romney, Hythe and Dymchurch Railway at New Romney.
Lots of activity at the station watching trains come and go, engines being swapped and stock moved about. We watched Winston Churchill depart from Dungeness then followed in the car to see it arrive at the station as shown in today’s blip.
So our Glaswegian friends have visited the end of the earth, probably as far away from Glasgow as it is possible to and still be in the UK. Flat shingle for as far as the eye can see and an eclectic mix of ramshackle holiday homes, posher houses, fishing paraphernalia and Derek Jarman’s house. Oh, and the nuclear power station looming ominously over everything. I don’t know what impression it made on them!
We retired to The Pilot for our fish supper and a couple of pints and are now enjoying a selection of whiskies.
