Virtual reality

Most of Scotland, of course, has long been a radioactive wasteland whose remaining inhabitants live in lead-lined pods deep underground, nourished through tubes. Many of them still believe the simulation fed to them through electrodes pasted to their shaved heads is real.

From this image alone it is easy to tell that it is not: nothing in the real world has been this clean or this decorative for at least a century. This is merely a simulation of an imagined Scotland which never really was.
