Our Queen
So very, very sad to hear the news this afternoon of the death of Her Majesty Queen Elisabeth II, and such a shock so soon after the handover of Prime Ministers on Tuesday.
Lots of emotion and tears shed by many all around the world and by me too as I have very personal memories:
In the early 60’s I worked for Hardy Amies in Savile Row, who provided her Majesty’s day wear for her trips abroad, Norman Hartnell designed and created her evening wear. I met Her Majesty on many occasions when she came to Saville Row with her dresser and with HA they chose her outfits, and once chosen it was up to me to order the fabric, lining, buttons etc and arrange appointments for the Tailor and dressmaker to attend the Palace for fittings etc.
Then there was my first memory: At the age of 7 at boarding school I was in the dressing gown cupboard next to Matrons’ sittingroom when I heard of the death of Her Majesty’s Father, King George VI. At my tender age it didn’t mean much to me then, but it certainly does today.
Now at my advancing age I’m proud to have shared these memories with our wonderful sovereign, but not sure her amazing reign can ever be repeated. RIP to an incredible lady and my condolences go out to all her family.
