Ærø, Denmark’s Gretna Green

Ærø, a small island around the southern coast of Fyn, is a stunningly beautiful corner of Denmark.  The local community are effective marketers and have you signing a mortgage to afford a (very good) cup of coffee or local craft beer.  They also offer rapid weddings, and do them with style and grace despite the speed.  When my son Soren and wife Demelza got caught in Covid lockdown in Rome the marriage bureaucracy had become glacial.  So they shot off to Ærø, a small island in the south of Fyn, Demark, to tie their knot.  Those cunning Dane’s allowed visitors to Denmark in Covid restrictions provided their guests stayed at least a week (more coffee sales).

Demelza and Soren had a wonderful time on Ærø, but us parents in New Zealand and Bolivia had to settle for witnessing the event via Zoom.  So we decided to return two years later with grandson in arms.
Here’s a photograph of the line-up of miniature “Beach houses” (glorified changing sheds) on the beach near Ærøskøbing Havn.  I’ve added a few extra photos of the town and surrounds.
