Proving a point

Is it an optical illusion?
A beautiful clear day in Zürich, on the way back from Pilates, I pointed out to my friend that the mountains look much higher when viewed down a street with tall buildings, than they do at the edge of the Lake where you have an open view.
If anyone has any comments on this, physics or mathematical theories or formulas, please let me know.
