Used to tap off part of the water supply from one leat to another so 2 homes can be supplied from a single source. Dartmoor has no spring supplies so the only so the locals over time have dug a network of drainage ditches over time to use the surface water.

You may think you could only supply a limited number of homes this way but in the 16th century the water supplies for Plymouth and Devonport were both provided this way
