Normandy Day 7
We have moved on to another campsite today and on the way visited the famous Pegasus Bridge. The capture of the River Orne bridge at Ranville and the bridge across the Caen Canal at Bénouville is the most famous mission of the airborne division. 180 troops of the Ox and Bucks Light Infantry, commanded by Major John Howard, captured the bridges after landing in Horsa gliders only metres from their objectives. Their emblem is the Pegasus hence the new name of the bridge. In less than ten minutes both bridges had been captured intact.
We arrived at our next site at 2pm and by 2.30 we were finally having our picnic lunch! We used the lovely heated pool after lunch which is under cover then had a long walk along the beach which was a few mins away. Another good day and colder but sunny!
