Rural NZ

We left Christchurch this morning, stopping in Culverden for morning tea. I took this photo out of the car window just South of Culverden.

Culverden is dairying country, with Fonterra having a big new milk concentration plant situated just outside of the town. At this plant, water is filtered out of the milk, which will cut the company's annual diesel bill by more than $800,000 a year. The plant effectively strains the water out of milk, reducing the volume to be transported to the company's Clandeboye site in South Canterbury for processing. Pretty smart thinking!

It started raining not far from Culverden, and progressively got worse by the time we arrived home. It is still raining, and has turned rather cold. We've lit our fire for the first time this year, so are nice and toasty inside!
