Heartfelt
These isles do ceremonies to perfection, from choristers to bagpipes, from the armed forces to the crowds, from the coming together of the churches to the dignity of the Royal family.
Having been in the Royal Naval Reserves and married a sailor I was spellbound by the discipline and concentration of the ratings pulling the gun carriage.
I was also proud of the 1st Battalion, Queen’s Company Grenadier Guards (our son’s old battalion) carrying Her Majesty’s coffin in and out of Westminster Abbey, into the hearse and then into St George’s chapel. Faultless.
The young prince and princess behaved impeccably on what must have been a church service beyond their years. They just got on with it.
If I feel drained, that is nothing compared to the family and those up and down the country, and across the world, who have taken the trouble to travel to London to pay their respects, or just to play a part in an unforgettable day.
