Nice gneiss
A grey day with bits of drizzle but it only added to the atmosphere. First back to Calanais as I said, busier but still beautiful. I’m a little bit obsessed with these glorious bits of gneiss aligned in the shape of a Celtic cross 2000 yrs before Christianity! I could have hugged every one of them…
We then crossed the “Bridge over the Atlantic” onto Great Bernera island on the west coast of Lewis and did a stunning walk along the Great Bernera Trail, a rugged, peaty coast line with dozens of sea lochs. At Bostadh beach we went into an Iron Age house which had been lost in the sand dunes and has been fully restored to how it was originally. After a walk on the beautiful white sand and seeing Vergette’s ‘ Time and Tide’ bell in the sea we head back inland to see Dun Carloway Broch, a 1st century BC fortified house. A varied day of history and atmospheric views.
