Saffron Walden
Caught up with a few chores this morning.
Had an afternoon in Saffron Walden at the Fry Art Gallery. It's a small gallery but we spent a long time looking at the work of local 20th century artists who settled in the village of Great Bardfield between the 1930s until 1983. Fabulous wood engravings, lino cuts, paintings drawings and lettering and illustrations in books, posters and on ceramics. My kind of interests.
The attached gardens were wonderful with different garden rooms. Blip is the fountain in the box maze. Every way one turned there was an interesting viewpoint of the rest of the garden with a foliage covered archway leading away from the maze towards steps leading to a terrace which branched out to the rose garden on the left or to a path towards the walled garden with espaliered pear trees and clay rhubarb forcing pots.
Sadly we were too late to grab a coffee and cake. Four o'clock is late for the two cafes we encountered.
Extra - charming buildings in Castle Street leading to the gallery.
Pleasant evening everyone.
