King’s Birthday in Kings Park
Today is a public holiday in Western Australia. For the last 70 years this day has been celebrated as Queen’s Birthday. I wonder if this is the first place in his new majesty’s realms where the present king’s birthday has been celebrated?
Kings Park is a 400 ha reservation on the edge of the Perth CBD. It was named Kings Park in 1901 to mark the accession to the throne of Edward VII, after the death of his mother Queen Victoria. There were lots of people there today, maybe some to celebrate the novelty of King’s Birthday in Kings Park.
We found some quiet walking tracks through the undeveloped part of the reserve and found wonderful Red and Green Kangaroo Paws in full flower. Anigozanthos manglesii is the floral emblem of Western Australia..
