Holy Trinity Church, Guildford
My wife and I drove over to Guildford today, first to pick up some items from B&Q, a large hardware and garden centre in a retail park off the Guildford by-pass, and then into the town itself. I looked into Holy Trinity Church at the top of the High Street for the first time, and had a very informative chat to the church volunteer who was there. The church is a Grade 1 listed building which opened in 1763, the previous church on the same site having collapsed in 1740. The church contains the tomb of George Abbot, who served as the Archbishop of Canterbury from 1611 to 1633 and founded Abbot's Hospital which is opposite the church. The term 'Hospital' is a bit of a misnomer - it was set up to provide homes for the elderly in Guildford originally for 20 single people. An extension in 1984 provided additional accommodation for 7 couples. The church is spacious and served as pro-cathedral whilst Guildford Cathedral was being built, a project that was begun in 1933 but, due to the interruption of war, was not completed until 1961.
