Empty Shed Syndrome
Four years ago our son started building us a garden shed - a chance to practice some of his sustainable building skills. First we got a green larch frame with a rough 'limecrete' floor, along with temporary walls, door and roof. Some time later, we got a green roof. Next came 'hempcrete' insulation in the walls, classy internal plywood lining and double glazed windows. More time passed; external lime rendering replaced the 'temporary' external facings. Last autumn some chunky, hand-built larch doors appeared. Tomorrow the final floor screed is due, so today's occupation has been taking everything out of the shed and finding somewhere to store, secure, shelter or stack it. Our neighbour's cement mixer is road tested, the sand is on the drive, the lime will arrive in the morning, we stand ready, shovel in hand and the scene is set. All my excuses for an untidy shed "because we will soon have to take everything out again" will vanish with the autumn mist
