STEAM GIANT

Anniversary - this week it is 40 years since the North York Moors Railway (NYMR) re-opened after the Beeching cuts to the railway system in the UK in the 1960's.

To mark the occasion the NYMR are extending their regular Steam Festival to last 10 days. Full details here.

It is quite a sight seeing working steam on a real railway. The line moves through some of the best scenery in England, between Pickering and Whitby - in North Yorkshire of course !

I had to choose this engine as it is one of the famous A4 class locomotives. Sir Nigel Gresley was built in 1937 and she is a proud member of the NYMR. You may have heard of her infamous speedy sister - Mallard !

Sir Nigel Gresley was the 100th Gresley Pacific engine to be built and, as such, was named after her designer. Originally numbered 4498 she started service with the London and North Eastern Railway (LNER). Under British Railways she was renumbered 60007.
