Head to head

The little black Highland calf may be a few weeks younger than the two brown ones, but he is already the same size and quite happy to take them on in sparring matches. These are little bulls after all. There is a little motion blur* in this shot I'm afraid, the light has been low all day under skies of battleship grey.

When I saw these two playing, I was somehow reminded of the school trip that I went on when I was 12. We stayed on the Spanish coast, not far from Barcelona, and one of the outings we were taken on was to a bullfight in the city. 6 proud bulls were clinically but messily despatched in front of the baying crowd. Can you imagine a school trip going to a bullfight today? It would be unthinkable. But what were they thinking of then, xx years ago? Bullfighting was banned in Catalonia in 2011 with effect from 1 January 2012. Thank goodness.
