The dropped stitch

In the Kirk

Such a day of heavy showers - it was a very wet 'congregation' who gathered at the nearby St Peter's Kirk this afternoon for a concert in aid of the Friends group.

Working alongside Historic Churches Scotland the Friends of St Peter's have ensured the church is now open again - for visitors each day and also for community events.

The interior is unusual with a central pulpit and communion pews. Originally there was one long communion table running the full length of the kirk. It is thought to be the only example of this layout in Orkney and one of very few in Scotland.

The narrow pews are closely packed and on the uncomfortable side. Many of today's concert goers arrived with a cushion under their arm.
