Kings Bowling Club

Kings Bowling Club was originally formed in 1927 as the Princess Gardens Bowling Club. The club, back then, occupied a position on the seafront near to where the Princess Theatre stands today. In the 1930s the Club moved to it’s present home in the King's Gardens, from which it took its name. Are there any other clubs that have changed gender? It is on King’s Drive, named after Edward VII, which dates from 1877. Changes in levels in an area considered to have once been an estuary, resulted in a small park, dominated by two lakes fed by a spring rising in the Sherwell Valley. The park was opened by the Mayor on 19 April 1904 but, the next month, the name was changed from Alexandra Gardens to The King’s Gardens.
Still don’t know if the club name should have an apostrophe. We walked through the park and passed here yesterday after a meal at a hotel celebrating a friend’s 80th birthday. We were looking quite spruced up and a youth passing by said ‘ good afternoon old bean’.
It is a lovely traditional pavilion, and on the right in the background you can see TARFC -
Torquay Athletic Rugby Football Club.
