hiding behind his lunch
I have to admit the best photo of the few today was probably the little mushrooms (reddening lipiota according to seek). But I can't resist the eyes on the juvenile cardinal eating the beauty berries , which are unfortunately out of focus in the front and not in the back of the bird. The day was cold, slightly windy and overall rather dark, especially in the woods. We decided to walk the Nature Conservancy trails at Nags Head Woods, a favorite spot we have been to several times before when visiting NC. Unfortunately more was heard than seen but I saw my first black and white warbler> I stalked one at my uncles for weeks in May and could hear it but never saw the little fink. We saw 4 of them today , which is why the bad photo of one in extras, being my first and all. ( Iso's were up around 2500 today and still things looked dim even though I used the smaller lens).
I did get a brief glimpse of a brown headed nuthatch -one of those birds you have to love because it's call sounds like a squeaky toy. No really .It does.
