Egg Case?

I was dead heading the roses and came across this spider and what I think could be an egg case (?). Very interesting.  In Extra, a plant I picked up recently - Tibouchina uvilleana or Princess plant (at least that's what the iPhone app says).  What a nice surprise to see these pretty flowers.
