Backblip
There was time for a short walk to take photos before catching the trains to Munich Airport.  The overnight rain had partly obscured some of the inscriptions on this very elaborate sundial.  I have been unable to discover any information about the armillary sundial but notice that it is calibrated for Oberstaufen and includes great detail like the times of the sun’s ascent and descent each month and position of the Pole Star and appears to be very accurate (disregarding the allowance for the change of time for “summer time”)
Many of the buildings in the area are decorated with paintings which show life as it might have been in past times and some have beautifully decorated eaves or elaborate signs which are often hung by breweries.
Interestingly the train return fare from the airport – a 3+ hour journey of about 100 miles (160 km) for the two of us cost just over half the return taxi fare from home to Edinburgh Airport which is only just over 16 miles (26 kms) away.  Mask wearing is mandatory on public transport and when S lowered his mask in order to have a drink to swallow his pill he was severely reprimanded by the ticket inspector who happened to pass by.  There were many people on the train dressed in traditional costume of lederhosen and dirndl skirts presumably to enjoy Octoberfest and festivities on the national holiday to celebrate the Reunification in 1990.
This is part of my series on sundials.   Sundial no 37
