Matera

We spent today in the incredible town of Matera, a short drive south of Altamura. The weather was much improved - we had only brief flurries of rain - but cooler and windier. We’ve been there before, but saw different bit of the area; today we approached the old, troglodyte township from the modern town above and approached the dolina, or ravine, from a different angle.

If you’ve seen Mel Gibson’s film The Temptation of Christ, you’ve seen bits of Matera. It featured in a recent film Mary Magdalene. Last time I was here we had our sandwiches sitting on a rock on Golgotha, looking towards Jerusalem, aka Matera. Google it - it’s an extraordinary place.
