Folly (not for the first time)
The Westgate shopping centre should never have been built, back in the 70s. It demolished the working class heart of non-university Oxford. No-one would have dared do that to university buildings.
The Westgate shopping centre should never have been redeveloped, back in the 10s. It has created huge traffic problems and such shops as have survived inline shopping have been tempted in so that what were the shopping streets of Oxford are now pop-up shops, short-lived failures and American Candy stores. In both the new Westgate Centre and the old shopping streets there are boarded-up retail premises that no-one wants. It was the brainchild of one councillor who has come up with a series of grandiose, ill-conceived idiocies (he has been defeated on many but not, sadly, this one) and I think it should bear his proud name: The Bob Price Folly.
