Napping

I arrived in the Society Hill section a few hours before it was time to give my walking tour, and the gates of the Old Pine Street Church yard were open. I had not wandered inside for some years, so a little stroll among the dead of the Revolutionary War generation was due.

I thought I was the only living person in the little place, but a woman was having a late morning nap on a bench behind the church, away from the tourists (who came along a little later as I was leaving). The gates had been open long. Probably a visitor tired out by walking the streets since dawn.

The weather was gloriously mild and sunny, the leaves about half filled out, the military graves neat and wearing their little flags.

This was the bright start of a sweet day in May.
