The Hill House

D suggested a trip to The Hill House, a Charles Rennie Macintosh designed mansion commissioned by Blackie the Glasgow publishers. The building and interior show CRMs work at its best, full of iconic detail and his love of black with bold punches of colour. Unfortunately his design was let down by his rendering choice which allowed water to penetrate and eventually damage brickwork and decor. National Trust built a huge chain mail box around the house supported by a steel structure incorporating stairs and walkways giving unique views of the outside not usually available to visitors. The intention is to keep off the damaging rain, dry out the building and repair the internal damage. The new(ish) cafe built into the steel frame extended the theme to their excellent Empire Biscuits. House, frame and biscuits all worth experiencing.
