Upware

This afternoon we went off over the Fen to Upware for a walk along Burwell Lode. We go there from time to time for a change of scene. The hot weather, the heavy lorries and bigger and bigger farm machinery have really damaged the roads out that way. In some places care is needed to avoid bottoming the car.

Some of these roads were built by Italian prisoners of war back in the 1940s, and it looks like they were laid on the peat with a minimal road bed. Amazing they have lasted as long as they have.

The photo is of a tree that always catches my eye when we go there.
