Pure as the driven snow
These beautiful grassland mushrooms are snowy waxcaps. They seem to change their scientific name at regular intervals but the currently-accepted scientific name seems to be Cuphophyllus virgineus. The specific epithet virgineus comes from the Latin for pure white.
Extra. On our second walk of the day we came across a group of a different waxcap. I am guessing that they are golden waxcaps Hygrocybe chlorophana. The genus Hygrocybe is so named because fungi in this group are always very moist and Hygrocybe means 'watery head'. The specific epithet chlorophana is something of a misnomer, because it translates to pale green whereas this particular waxcap is usually yellow or orange!
