Reflections

In the past so many communities of North Uist were separated by water from their neighbours. Some links were possible by low tide fords using horse-drawn carts, but most links were by boat.  Small cargo ships, called ‘puffers’ brought in goods and took away produce. They had flat bottoms so they could be stranded deliberately on the sandy beaches and stony shores. 


This sculpture called ‘Reflections’ stands on a promontory above a shallow cove which was the old crossing point between two crofting townships before a causeway was built. It is one of several Road End Art Works spread through the Uists. It is a sweeping ceramic tiled seat, wrapped around natural rocky outcrops. Created by artist Colin Mackenzie, the glazed tiles reflect the surrounding colours. (Extra - this sign amused us . . . just in case you miss it or don’t know what it is!!)

This photo came through this afternoon. Our daughter and her husband completed the Eden Project Half Marathon, which is apparently Cornwall’s biggest running event. It is a ‘multi-terrain route - challenging’. Joanne said it was ‘hilly’ and ‘brutal’. Well done both of them - they deserved the free beer and pasty!
