Life in a Northern Town

Hills Are Filled With Fire

I went out to take some photographs at Buckstones Edge on a fairly grey evening with not much potential. Then I spotted this massive hill fire across the M62, somewhere above Ripponden. I am hoping that one of the Blippers who lives that way will get a closer shot - and that they're safe and well!

I chose this shot as I didn't realise at the time, but it has a helicopter in the frame. You MUST go large! It's a very breezy evening and I watched the fire spread very quickly in the wind. I then got a little freaked as I realised it was on similar terrain, with no mobile phone and nobody knew I was there.

I have put some shots in my Blipfolio to give you an idea of the scale of the fire. I could smell the smoke from where I was standing, and you could see the traffic slowing on the M62 to look at the flames.

I am glad to be safe and well at home. It was a busy day of dog visiting (someone else expressed an interest in our dog - it brought out a possessive streak in me I did not know was there) and clearing out junk at my father-in-law's house. I had no real idea what to Blip today - you just never know what's out there.

So, as I quoted the great Jim Morrison in the title, I think we need a Sunday evening helping of fine music. Here's 7'45" of perfection.

Update - local paper says the fire was started deliberately, and the heather might take 15 years to recover. Cannot begin to understand the mindset of someone who would do that.
