Reaper FR 958
today the herring fishing vessel Reaper is in Portree - such excitement! All the schools in the area were visiting her this morning, and it was a pleasure going aboard with the children from Raasay.
this fisherman is wearing the traditional Gansey - knitted for him by his wife. It is the tradition that Ganseys are knitted by the wife or mother of the fishermen, adding in a special stitch that only she knows of, so that if the boat and crew is lost, she will be able to identify her stitch, and thereby her men.
Reaper is touring the west coast just now, and if you get the chance, I'd thoroughly recommend a visit.
