Mouth of the River Scheldt

Thank you Ingeborg for helping us in our mission to create a blipper-sourced 'album' of the places mentioned in Lorna Lloyd's Diary of the war (previously blipped in the LornaL journal, and now available as a podcast series).

Ingeborg has also provided a shot of a model of the east and west of the River Scheldt (extra). This is on display at the Deltawerken exhibition within the Deltapark complex on the (artificial) island of Neeltje Jans in Zeeland. Ingeborg explains that the West-Scheldt is extremely important for the ports of Antwerp and Ghent in Belgium. It is for this reason that the allied forces fought in Zeeland in 1940, as noted in Lorna's (heartfelt) diary entry of  May 15th of that year. (This part of the Netherlands was also one of the first liberated after D-Day: see details of the Battle of the Scheldt in 1944. Sadly Lorna did not survive to chronicle the latter stages of the war).
