Kinneff Old Kirk

Where in 1652 the Honours ( Crown Jewels) of Scotland were hidden after being rescued from Dunnottar Castle during Oliver Cromwell's seige of 1652. The intrepid Minister James Grainger and his wife Christian Fletcher bravely smuggled them out of the castle despite a heavy guard. The Honours were buried beneath the floor of the Kirk until the Restoration of Charles 11 in 1660 when they were returned to Edinburgh Castle.

The memorial to James Grainger is in the extra.

There are various theories as to how the Honours were actually smuggled out. Two are that Mrs Grainger carried them out hidden in a bundle of flax or that they were lowered down the cliff at dead of night. In this version Mrs Gainger was gathering seaweed and hid the Crown, sceptre and sword of state in her creel.
