Out for a walk in the sun
We walked down fields to the beaver stream, crossed at the stepping stone, and went up the fields on the other side, up to the forest edge.
Down at the stream we found that the beavers hadn't returned to live, after their dams were destroyed by the farmer two years ago. I was a bit sad at that but they will be back - they are a very expansive species. Also down at the stream we were surprised by how many crossing spots/paths were made by the various species of deer that live in our forest. We see mostly roe deer, sometimes elk (moose), and in the rutting season we hear red deer night after night, but they seem shyer than ther others. The deer all seem to move around a fair bit, maybe they also find the grass greener on the other side.
For us it was certainly warmer on the other side of the valley, facing the sun as it does. I ended up carrying my jacket as I got too warm, while on the shaded sections of the walk the ground was still white with frost.
In the afternoon we cooked a roast dinner for ourselves and Rose. We had a largish corn fed fresh chicken, cooked in a clay pot with veggies. I did roast potatoes following a BBC recipe with some extra knowledge from Ruth about extra fat and fluffing up the boiled spuds - all good ways to add to the fat content and crispiness! It was delicious, but I understand why we don't eat like this too often!
The extra shows the present stage of the new bathroom in the Red House. You can see the gold floor at the moment, before the sink and shower are fitted. It seems to be coming along in leaps and bounds just now - we hope that continues.
