Still waters run deep

After morning downpours the pond was flat calm this afternoon.  But it's not somewhere I'd like to step in to, just beyond the sunken trunk there's about 4 feet of water resting on 5 feet of mud.  I know that because I stepped in the shallow edge of it a few weeks ago.
