Wisley Church

This is the tiny church at Wisley, a village that can trace its history back to the Iron Age. In Weybridge museum a dug-out canoe has been reconstructed from remains found embedded in the Wey riverbank. It is reckoned to have been a ferry boat used by the villagers in about 500 B.C. The church itself dates from the mid-12th century with significant restorations carried out in 1872 in memory of Charles Buxton MP, who had been a strong supporter of William Wilberforce in rhe struggle to abolish slavery. Although in a quite isolated position, services continue to be held in the church every Sunday morning.
