A Meandering Life...

St Mary's Church, Leake.

First off I'd like to thank everyone who have visited my journal and left comments etc about my stained glass work and doodles over the past few day, it is much appreciated.

Keeping up with the stained glass theme we visited a local church this morning to check out the graveyard (as you do...). It is on the busy A19 and we have past it dozens of times and promised ourselves a visit.

St Mary's Church is all what is left of the Saxon village of Leake, once home to 1500 people. The tower dates to about 1100AD with most of the rest built during the 13th Century. The village disappeared during the Medieval period. Much of what is seen today was completed by the 16th Century.

The building and the graveyard is in remarkable condition, many of the old gravestones would normally fall foul of the H&S brigade but have been kept. The church now serves the wider community including the villages of Borrowby and Knayton.

The church was open and I have added a number of images of inside and out on my Flickr page
