Recruitment

Today I walked Django then went into work, where I had a meeting with one of our PhD students. As expected, he was keen to be recruited to our team for 12 months - in the first instance. He can't do the big job - that may yet fall to me - but he has the right skills to be useful in other ways.

After lunch, our Student Advisor called in to discuss how the new class had settled in, and how we would improve the induction process next year. We ended up talking for longer than we'd expected, which was a pleasure. After another hour's programming, my Year 4 project students arrived, and we had a useful discussion. They're largely back on track now, which was quite a relief.

I then went over to join A, L and K at Mum's flat, where L and K identified the things of sentimental value that they would want to keep when the flat is cleared. That's not happening any time soon, but probably will before L returns from her winter working in Costa Rica.

Finally we went to a Japanese restaurant in the centre of Edinburgh to mark L's imminent departure. It was excellent, even if it lacks Bonsai's charm. I thought twice about ordering this "spider roll" (soft shell crab and avocado with sesame, flying fish eggs, mayonnaise and tempura flakes) because it was a bit expensive. However, it was the best thing I've eaten for a while, so was well worth it.
