Between fen and mountains

Les boulistes

I went down to the market this morning to buy some fish and mussels and afterwards returned home to prepare a painting for Monday. In the afternoon I went out looking for a photo and came across the boulistes next to the tennis courts. A friend, Gaby, was sitting on the bench watching the world go by so I joined him and he talked to me at length, recounting his stories of the village and the great flood of 1940. At 93 years old, he is one of the last in the village to have experienced the flood firsthand. He told me that where we were sitting used to be just fields of orchards but they were all swept away along with all the major hotels of the village.
